Swimming and diving the alpine lakes remains an all time highlight of our 200-mile traverse across the Sierra Nevada last fall. There are literally thousands of these precious gems along the high route, each twinkling in the ever present sunshine. Our crew adopted the practice of the daily swim right from the start. This usually coincided with a midday break sprawled out in a lake-side meadow. There were also some ‘two lake’ days when we came across water too spectacular to pass up. Three lake days were rare, but happened. Those of you that live south of the Canadian border will have to excuse our enthusiasm. If you’re swimming in Alaska, it’s usually not a leisure situation.
