Skiing Iceland’s Troll Peninsula for Black Diamond

ICLSKI20130415-1857

Last spring we wrapped up our ski season with a two-week shoot in Iceland to showcase Black Diamond’s new apparel line. At the beginning of April, we took the polar flight to Reykjavik and then onto the northern hub of Akureyri. Our agenda for the next ten days was to hit the road on a bonafide backcountry road trip. No guides, no lodges and no helis. Relying on local maps and ‘line of sight’, we explored several valleys of the Tröllaskagi, or Troll Peninsula. Often our chosen mountain would take us on a thousand-meter powder run right down to the Greeland Sea. The bone dry Arctic snow was plentiful, as was hot spring water and hospitality. Give it a try if you’re looking to extend your ski season. Just be sure you know what you’re getting into before ordering the Svið.
