Hut Trek in New Zealand’s Mount Aspiring National Park

A recent conversation reminded us of a serendipitous trek ‘down under’. With a week to kill after completion of an assignment in New Zealand, we chose a quick hut trip in spectacular Mount Aspiring National Park close to Wanaka/Queenstown. The trek into the Liverpool Hut (listed as 6 hrs) starts off crossing some sheep paddocks (with sheep) and a couple suspension bridges. The final section is very steep, much like climbing a ladder through the trees than walking a track. The end result is a magnificently placed hut overlooking the Matukituki River in one direction and the park’s namesake peak (3,027 meters) to the other. We were joined by a couple Australians gunning for the summit of nearby Mt Barff and entertained by a host of energetic keas during our stay. Huge thanks to New Zealand Tourism and Wilderness Motorhomes for taking good care of us on that trip. Cheers!

Keep up with what we’re doing while we do it on Instagram and Facebook.
